A Tricked Proposal
by Jilliana Ranicar-Breese

It was a leap year on 29th February. I was with my boyfriend Martin staying in Michael’s studio in the 15th arrondissement in Paris.

It was about midnight when we got back to the studio.
I sat on the bed and Martin loomed over me looking at me steadily saying

‘Don’t you have something to ask me?’
‘No’ I replied puzzled at the question.
He continued.
‘I’m SURE you have something to ask me’ he insisted.

Our eyes locked and I saw he was very serious.
He waited while I digested his words.
Eureka
‘Oh do you want to get married?’
‘That’s it. Call your mother with the good news and call Michael too.’

Martin the magician had trapped me in a magical guilded cage.

It was leap year, which happens every 4 years. Martin had seized the opportunity all those years ago. For better or for worse. He knew that women asked men to marry on leap year. I didn’t. Well he subliminally ‘forced’ me to ask him and then proclaimed to everyone that I had asked him to marry me. Martin, I was to discover in the 25 years we were together, was full of tricks.
