The Substance of Nothing
by Michael C. Keith

“There’s no afterlife,” declared Sarah. “When we die . . . we simply die. That’s it, period. We’re caput. It’s the end of the road . . . fini.”

“Yeah,” agreed Emil. “There’s no heaven or hell. We don’t go anywhere. We just enter the void”

“What’s a void?” asked 11 year old Linda.

“It’s nothingness,” answered Sarah.

After a period of careful thought, Linda replied. “Well, if there is nothingness, then there is something . . . right?”

Neither adult responded.
