A Snippet of Conversation Between Harrison Ford and His Father

by Michael C. Keith

Everyone thinks I’m just a silly kid when I say I want to be a movie star or a carpenter when I grow up. Why do they bother asking me that question if they’re going to laugh at what I say? I don’t think it’s impossible that someone discovers me if we’re in Hollywood where all the studios are. That’s the reason I want to go there, I tell my Dad.

“Ain’t that easy, son,” he says, and then tells me to stick with the idea of becoming a hammer and nail man, as he calls it.

“Maybe I can do both,” I say.

“Yeah,” he answers, grinning broadly, “You could build yourself a movie house.”
