The Presidential Weave à la Gaga
by Vincent Barry

“. . . like, like heroes. They’re American heroes. Who the heck wants to sit? You know, those ships are very big, but they’re very small. When you’re way up high going very fast, and he said it was the greatest day of his life, and they told me something I didn’t know. ‘Sir, we waited twenty-two years for this and our predecessors and us would practice this run for twenty-two years. I didn’t know but for twenty-two years we would have to practice. We would do it three times a year, because they cancelled when they heard we were coming. We were devastated.’ ‘I see,’ I say, ‘If I were a flyer and they cancelled I’d be extraordinarily happy. I mean it was really great.’ . . . We have incredible people in the sky. It’s an amazing story. And they hit, and they skedaddle. The word skedaddle. And the plane went like this WHIRRRR! You know, when it drops a bomb it goes very steeply because they get a better angle and, you know, more speed for the bomb—a very, very heavy bomb and they go BOOM! As soon as those things—the one pilot—the first was it?—skedaddle! And the thing turned on its side. I mean it’s unbelievable . . . .”
