Glitter
by Judy Cabito
We all looked
at Auntie with our fake smiles. Each year it was
the same. One of us would receive the annual
monetary gift. In the years, the amount increased
from five to ten, then twenty, then fifty. This
is the year of a one-hundred-dollar bill. The
card contained a flimsy, green folded bill, with
the merry salutation: Happy Holidays, Auntie.
Three-year-old Amanda not impressed, ripped open
the card to find the flimsy bill. On scooping up
it, the envelope and bits of wrapping, she ran
gleefully to the fireplace and tossed it in.
